                                              LEARNING TO DRIVE.

Everything you need to know about Learning to Drive can be found on this page. Taking driving lessons with Anston School Of Motoring will open a whole new world to you, so we have provided the information below which will be of benefit the to the learner driver before taking any type of driving course.

Legal Requirements.

The minimum age at which you are allowed to drive on public roads is 17. Until you have passed your Practical Driving Test you are not allowed to drive on your own, and must be accompanied by someone who is over 21 years of age and has held a full British Driving Licence for over 3 years. You must hold a Provisional Driving Licence which is signed in ink before you can drive. Some foreign nationals holding a Driving Licence of a different country may be able to exchange it directly for a UK Licence. All others will need to follow the same route as non licenced UK residents. You must also make sure your eyesight meets the required standard. Your Driving Instructor will check your eyesight before he allows you to drive the car. He will do this by asking you to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet). If you require glasses or contact lenses to do this, you must wear them for driving the car. It is illegal to drive a car if you cannot pass the eyesight test.

Selecting a Driving Instructor.

It is recommended by the Driving Standards Agency that you take lessons from an Approved Driving Instructor. (Our instructor, Geoff Turner, is a Grade 5 Approved Driving Instructor). To become an ADI you must take and pass examinations which are set at a very high standard. Anyone who takes payment for giving Driving Lessons must be registered with the Driving Standards Agency, and he or she must display an ADI certificate on the windscreen of the training vehicle. See below.

Your First Driving Lesson.

Please bring with you both parts of your driving licence as we need to check both the photocard and paper licence before you are allowed to drive. An eyesight test will also be given.

If you have had previous experience then your instructor will discuss with you what has been covered so far. He will then ask you to drive so that a professional assessment can be made of your driving standard, and at what level your tuition should begin.

If it is your first driving lesson then your instructor will drive you to a quiet area where you will exchange seats. Your instructor will then give an explanation of the course your driving lessons will take, and also how the progress report is made.

You will then be taught the Cockpit Drill, followed by an explanation of the controls of the vehicle. Driving plans will be discussed followed by the correct procedures for moving off and stopping. At the end of the lesson the instructor will give you a debrief and arrange a time and date for your next lesson.

Preparing For Your Driving Test.

When you have selected your Driving School and met your Driving Instructor, the enjoyable experience of learning to drive will commence. You will follow a Driving Syllabus which has been designed to meet the requirements of the Driving Standards Agency in preparation for your Driving Test. The Driving Test is split into two parts. The first part is the Theory Test, and the second part is the Practical Driving Test. Your Driving Instructor will teach you the necessary skills and advise you on learning aids which you may need in order to pass both parts of the Driving Test. Training will be structured to meet your individual requirements.

How many lessons will I need?

DSA research shows that the current average number of driving lessons taken before passing the Driving Test is 45hrs. with an additional 22hrs. private practice. However, nobody is average therefore for everyone who can pass in 20hrs. there is someone who will require 60hrs. It is generally accepted that the older you are the more lessons you will need, but this is not always the case. People learn at different speeds, dependant on their confidence or personalities etc.

Learning to drive and pass your Driving Test is one of the most exciting times of our lives, leading to new levels of independance and job opportunities. It can also be very expensive and take a long time. That is why it is of the upmost importance to select the corrrect Driving School. At Anston School Of Motoring it is our aim for you to pass your Driving Test as quickly as possible, making you a safe, confident driver for life.

Practicing with Family and Friends.

Learning to drive a car safely and efficiently in modern traffic involves much more than training to pass a government road test and get a licence. However this is a necessary first stage. Government driver examiners want to ensure that the new driver has adequate control over the vehicle, knows the rules of the road and the correct procedures for managing a vehicle in traffic, and can make safe decisions.

The professional Driving Instructor is skilled in teaching these methods. Your role as a parent/co-driver is to reinforce what the instructor teaches and provide practice time.

Don't carry passengers when you are training. This can have an affect on the drivers concentration. Stay alert. Some beginners may give the impression of being confident, but may be totally unprepared to deal with any sudden change in conditions and will be very reliant on you the co-driver. Anticipate problems and always be ready to react. Communicate clearly and give directions well in advance. Don't get excited during practice sessions as this communicates quickly to the driver and can make performance difficult. Under no circumstances lose your temper and shout. Stay calm and encourage the driver. Do not clash with what the professional driving instructor teaches. If you have any doubts about the driving techniques, discuss this with the driving instructor. Make it an enjoyable time for both of you.
