  Practice Makes Perfect.

Eco Driving.

Eco driving is a rising trend across Europe as more and more motorists become aware that by changing the way they drive can reduce their fuel consumption by as much as 25%. It is also a reality that it will be included in the practical driving test in the near future.

This style of driving leads to a relaxed posture behind the steering wheel giving more comfort to both driver and passengers, so naturally the earlier you start to practice eco-driving the more natural and logical it all seems.

Eco driving is not a completely different way of driving, it's the small changes that make a differance.

* Enhanced hazard perception and awareness skills.

* Reducing emissions and noise output.

* Reduces fuel consumption.

* Less wear and tear on the car.

* Less stressed driving environment.

Adopting an eco driving style is easy, and once you've mastered it, not only start to make real savings, but you will also be doing your bit for the envirnment by producing less carbon dioxide (CO2), the main gas contributing to climate change.

                                     THE MANOEUVRES EXPLAINED.

1/. THE TURN IN THE ROAD.

At the start of the manoeuvre you will be parked at the side of the road, then asked by the examiner to execute a turn in the road.

1st Point. Before moving off look all around, and if no other road users are around and the road is clear move off very slowly and immediately steer full lock to the right. Have a glance up and down the road as you drive across to check it is still safe. Slow down before you reach the kerb stopping so the front of the car is about 30cm from the kerb. Turn the steering wheel to the left as much as you can just before stopping. Secure the car and select reverse gear.

2nd Point. Before reversing do all round observations. If any other road users are nearby, do not move off until you are sure of their intensions. When safe reverse back slowly looking over your left hand shoulder, steering briskly full lock to the left. Have a glance up and down the road as you drive across to check it is still safe. As you approach the kerb slow down and look over your right shoulder to judge your position and stop about 30cm from the kerb. Turn the steering wheel to the right as much as you can just before stopping. Secure the car and select 1st gear.

3rd Point. Before moving off do all round observations, and if no other road users are around and the road is clear move off very slowly and steer sufficiently to the right to end up on the left hand side of the road and continue on your journey. Have a glance up and down the road as you drive across to check it is still safe.

The turn in the road does not always need to be three points. This is dependent on the width off the road, vehicle used etc.

Every time you steer keep the car very slow and the steering fast.

2/. REVERSE ROUND LEFT HAND CORNER INTO JUNCTION.

MOVE ONE. Before starting the manoeuvre you will be parked at the side of the road before the junction. Move off when safe using MSM routine and look into junction when passing to check it is clear to do manoeuvre. Use MSM routine again and continue to drive to start position which is approx. 30cm (1ft) from kerb, parallel to kerb and the rear of our car about one car length past the point of turn into the junction. Secure car and select reverse gear.

MOVE TWO. Before reversing back take all round observations, and when safe, looking over right hand shoulder, slowly drive back to the point of turn which is when your rear wheels reach the beginning of the bend. Glance into your LH door mirror occasionally whilst driving back to check your position from the kerb and also glance around to check for other road users which may approach. Don't keep stopping unless to continue would inconvenience anyone. Stop at the point of turn and secure car.

MOVE THREE. Before moving back take all round observations. Remember front of car will swing towards centre of road when you start steering, so be aware of vehicles from all directions. When safe, look over LH shoulder and slowly start to drive back turning steering wheel briskly to the left about three quarters of a turn for an average sized bend. This will get you somewhere near but make any adjustments to steering as required. Keep looking over LH shoulder but keep glancing around occasionally for any approaching road users and also glance into LH door mirror to check your position from kerb. When parallel with new road straighten up wheels and continue reversing back approx. 3 - 4 car lengths. Secure car. Remember to keep glancing around throughout the manoeuvre and checking your position from kerb through LH door mirror BUT DO NOT STARE. You should mainly be looking over your LH shoulder.

Note :-  At any time while reversing, if another vehicle approaches you from behind then you must stop when they are nearby or if they are waiting for you to continue. Once you know it is safe continue with the manoeuvre.

If on the corner a vehicle approaches from behind, you may have to pull forward into the main road to give them space to turn at the junction. Once they are clear start reversing again.

Once you are in the new road keep glancing for vehicles turning into the junction from the main road and be prepared to stop.

Remember to do your observations before pulling forward and before reversing again.

Don't wait unnecesssarily for oncoming vehicles.

3/. REVERSE (PARALLEL) PARK.

Before starting this manoeuvre you will be parked at the side of the road before the target vehicle.

Move A. Use MSM routine, and when safe drive slowly forward alongside and parallel to target vehicle about 1metre away, your bodyline level to the front of the vehicle and the wheels straight. Secure car.

Move B. Take all round observations, and when safe, looking over LH shoulder slowly reverse back to the point of turn which is when the rear of our vehicle is level with the rear of the target vehicle. Stop and secure the car at this position.

Move C. Take all round observations, and when safe, looking over LH shoulder slowly start to reverse back and turn the steering wheel one full turn to the left. Keep glancing around to check for other road users. At  5 past (imagine target vehicle pointing to 12'o clock) straighten wheels by turning steering wheel one full turn back to the right.

Move D. Keep reversing back in a straight line until our rear wheel is about 30cm (1ft) from kerb. Glance in door mirror to check position. At this point keeping car really slow, briskly turn steering wheel full lock to the right. When car is parallel to kerb, steer briskly to left (approx. one and a half turns) to straighten wheels up.  Remember to keep glancing round to check for other road users. Reverse back in straight line till you see tyres to tarmac on target vehicle. Stop and secure car.

Your car should now be close (within 1ft) and parallel to the kerb and within two car lengths of the target vehicle.

4/. REVERSING INTO A PARKING BAY.

Before starting the manoeuvre you will be parked at the side of the road and the examiner will ask you to reverse the car into a parking bay on either the left or right hand side of the road.

POSITION ONE.

Check all round. When safe, drive forward and stop the car alongside and parallel to the bay, with the side of the car approx. 30cm (1ft) from the end of the bay, and your referance point (ie interior door handle on my car) lining up with the centre of the bay. Secure the car. See images above.

POSITION TWO.

All round observations. When clear drive slowly forwards turning steering wheel briskly full lock away from the bay. When the car is about 45 degrees to the bay, glance in the door mirror and you will see the rear of the car moving across the front of the bay we are reversing into. When half way across, stop and secure the car. Don't forget to keep looking round for other road users. See images above.

POSITION THREE.

All round observations. When clear and looking over shoulder, slowly reverse back turning steering wheel briskly full lock in opposite direction. As car is approaching the bay keep glancing in door mirrors to check position. Make any adjustments to steering as required. When car is parallel to bay, straighten up the wheels and reverse in straight line till car is fully in the bay. Take care not to go too far back to avoid any obstructions at the end of the bay. Keep checking around the car for other road users throughout the manoeuvre, but you should mainly be looking behind. Remember you are allowed one move forward to make any corrections if required. See images above.

This method is the same for reversing into a bay on either the left or right hand side.
